Subfamily Paracypridinae Sars, 1923

Introduction

The subfamily is divided into three tribes, of which only the Renaudcypridini McKenzie, 1980 lacks representatives in Australia. Paracypridinae are marine Candonidae.

 

Diagnosis

Carapace elongate, laterally compressed and mostly with height less than half length. Surface smooth, rough or with fine ribs. Right valve little larger than left one. Inner calcified lamella broad, as well as fused zone. Marginal pore canals usually long and branched. Antennula 5–7-segmented. Antenna 3–4-segmented. Swimming setae on second antenna short or completely absent. Male first thoracopod transformed into 2-segmented prehensile palp. Second thoracopod walking leg, with one terminal claw; third thoracopod transformed into cleaning leg with well-developed terminal segment carrying one long and 2 short setae. Caudal ramus with no or variable number of posterior setae. Zenker's organ with maximum of seven rows of spines.
