Rottnest Island (32°S) to Cape Arnhem, NT, and Ashmore Reef, Coral Sea (10°27'S) to Newcastle, NSW (33°S, 152°E), also, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea (12°S, 123°E), MIddleton Reef, Elizabeth Reef and Lord Howe Island, Tasman Sea; tropical, east-Indo-west-central Pacific, misidentified by most authors as Chlorurus gibbus, a species from the Red Sea.
