Introduction
Roberts (1993) and Roberts & Gomon (2008) is followed here in recognising Wreckfishes as a distinct family. The family contains 2 genera and 4 species found in subtropical and temperate seas of the world. The species have been previously placed in the families Serranidae, Percichthyidae or Acrompomatidae (Paxton et al. 2006). More recently, Nelson (2006) has also assigned Polyprion and Stereolepis to Polyprionidae. The species are normally found below 100 m. They are important commercial food fishes, but to a minor extent in Australia.
