Introduction

Pandalid shrimps are cosmopolitan in distribution. They occupy of a variety of habitats and niches, from an oceanic pelagic existence to commensal benthic associations, and from the littoral zone to more than 3000 metres. About 20 genera are currently recognised, of which seven are known from Australia. Holthuis (1993: 261) provided a key to genera. Some important recent papers covering Australian pandalids include those of Kensley et al. (1987), Hanamura & Takeda (1987) and Hanamura & Evans (1996).
