Type data:
Holotype ZMA 111.814, Etna Bay, Papua, Indonesia (as south-west New Guinea).

Introduction
This species is difficult to separate from Oxyeleotris aruensis. Both are found together in rivers of Cape York, with this species not currently known from south of the Pascoe River, QLD. It is likely that some literature records are misidentifications.
