Introduction

Knifejaw fishes are confined to temperate regions of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, occurring in Japan, Hawaii, South America, South Africa and southern Australia. The Oplegnathidae contain one genus with six species, one found in Australia (Nelson 2006). Oplegnathids are similar to parrot fishes in that they have a parrot-like beak.
