Subfamily Notodromatinae Kaufmann, 1900

Introduction

The subfamily comprises the genera Notodromas Lilljeborg, 1853; Newnhamia King, 1855 and Kennethia De Deckker, 1979. Only the first genus does not have representatives in Australia.

Diagnosis

Carapace stout, dorsally rounded, never elongate in lateral view; anterior and posterior margins broadly rounded. Ventral valve surface flattened, with longitudinal ridges, this structure enabling animals to cling upside-down to the surface of the water. Eye cups of both nauplii and adults separated, each with distinct convex lens. Left valve overlaps right one ventrally. Inner calcified lamella and fused zone both narrow, marginal pore canals straight. Antenna 5-segmented. Respiratory plate on first thoracopod absent. Terminal segment of third thoracopod small but distinct. Posterior seta of caudal ramus claw-like standing closely to posterior claw. Attachment of caudal ramus complex, with several proximal loops.
