Introduction
The family Neoceratiidae includes a single species known from meso- and bathypelagic waters of all major oceans. Bertelsen (1951) and Bertelsen & Pietsch (1983) studied the species. Neoceratias spinifer is unique in being the only deepsea anglerfish lacking an illicium. Males are parasitic on the females, which have been recorded to 10.8 cm in length. Feeding habits are unknown. Pietsch (2009) summarised knowledge of the group.
