Genus Moolgarda Whitley, 1945

Introduction

The genus has generally been recognised as Valamugil. Thompson (1997) regarded Moolgarda as a synonym of Liza based on examination of paratypes. Senou (2002) noted that the holotype of the type species of Moolgarda (M. pura) was a specimen of Valamugil seheli, the type species of Valamugil. The holotype probably does not exist, but the original description indicates that Senou (2002) was correct (Kottelat 2013). As a result Moolgarda is the older name.
