Genus Matumuia Day, 1999

Compiler and date details

9 April 2012 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This monotypic genus is based on a single male from North Queensland. It is quite distinctive with the median pronotal process curving upwards and extending well beyond the apex of the tegmina, which are themselves very long. Day (1999) notes that the species is also unusual in Australian Membracidae by having the ocelli aligned with the midpoint of the eyes. However, without additional specimens, the validity of this genus as separate from Sarantus Stål is, in the view of the compiler, dubious since the single male could be a morphological aberration. The etymology was given by Day (1999) as "The name is derived from that of an Aboriginal tribe."

Diagnosis

The alignment of the ocelli with midpoint of eyes is unusual in Australian Membracidae. Median pronotal process prolonged and slightly enlarged apically, unlike any other endemic genus. Tegmen very long, m–cu1 present. Apical cells almost straight. Lateral plates unusually large and elongate (Day 1999).
