Holotype CAS (SU) 29073, Goror Reef, Belau (as Pelew Islands).
Paratype(s) CAS (SU) 16961; FMNH 47384.
Introduction
Specimens of the genus Ancistrogobius are often misidentified as this species. The photo in Randall et al. (1990, 1997) is of a representative of this genus and probably photographed from New Guinea. Ancistrogobius is not known from specimens from Australia. Similarly Randall (2005) illustrated an Ancistrogobius from Papua New Guinea identified as Macrodontogobius. Allen & Erdmann (2012) correctly illustrated Macrodontogobius wilburi labelled as female, but the photo labelled male is of Exyrias belissimus. The species is not obviously sexually dimorphic.
