Tribe Macroceratogoniini Kirkaldy, 1906

Compiler and date details

26 May 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This tribe was created for the single species Macroceratogonia aurea Kirkaldy, affinities of which are still uncertain. Kirkaldy (1906) described it in the Tettigoniidae (= Cicadellinae) but Evans (1947) placed it in the Nirvaninae. Dietrich (2004) placed the Macroceratogoniini as a tribe of the Coelidiinae based on the presence of setigerous tubercles on the pronotum and presence of a median dorsal tooth with a pair of basolateral projections on the second valvulae of the ovipositor in both groups but (Dietrich pers. comm. 2011) considers that it may belong with the Neocoelidiinae, a subfamily not currently represented in the Australian fauna. Evans (1966) transferred Petalocephala aurescens Distant, from New Caledonia, into the genus Macroceratogonia and Evans (1974) synonymised it with M. aurea so the tribe remains monobasic.

Diagnosis

The vertex is subhorizontal, flat, subquadrangularly produced before the eyes, wider apically than at the base; ocelli on the vertex anterior to the apical margin of the eyes. Antennal seta enormously long (Kirkaldy 1906).
