- Coelididae Dohrn, F.A. 1859. Homoptera. Catalogus Hemipterorum. Stettin : Entomologischen Verein zu Stettin 102 pp. [84].
Type genus:
Coelidia Germar, 1821.
Introduction
This subfamily is distributed worldwide and has been extensively studied in a series of major publications by M.W. Nielson. Up to eleven tribes are recognised, of which only the Tharrini were recorded from Australia by Nielson (1975) with the single genus Tharra Kirkaldy containing four Australian species. Dietrich (2004) regarded the Australian endemic Macroceratogoniini as a tribe of the Coelidiinae whereas previous workers, notably Evans (1947, 1966), placed it as a tribe of the Nirvaninae. Dietrich (2004) is followed here although Dietrich (pers. comm. 2011) has indicated that it may be more appropriately placed in the Neocoelidiinae, a subfamily not currently recognised in the Australian fauna.
Diagnosis
Nielson (1975) notes that the Coelidiinae "embraces such a diversity of forms that it is not possible to generalize upon any given morphological feature of the group. The key given by Fletcher (2009, see URL below) uses the following features to differentiate the Australian fauna of the group: hind femur with at least two spines preapically; tegmen with three preapical cells; antennae situated closer to eyes than to apex of head; tegmen with appendix moderately to well developed, at least twice as wide as apical veins; crown and dorsal portion of face laterally carinate and raised above eyes; antennae long; crown narrower than dorsal length of an eye.
