Introduction
This species was referred to as a single widespread Indo-Pacific species Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879) prior to 2011. However recognition of there being two forms led ultimately to M. rosenbergii being split into two separate species, one distributed from central-west Indonesia through Indochina and South Asia which has retained the name Macrobrachium rosenbergii (De Man, 1879), and the second distributed from eastern Indonesia, Philippines, New Guinea and Australia which has been referred to Macrobrachium spinipes (Schenkel, 1902). Ng & Wowor (2011) explain the history and reasons for the name change which are nomenclaturally complex, but are now resolved with the Australian form as M. spinipes. Short (2004) and Wowor & Ng (2007) both discuss the Australian species, as "M. rosenbergii". Short (2004) gives an extensive assessment of the species in Australia, while Wowor & Ng (2007) provides extralimital distribution data.
