Species Lydda koebelei (Muir, 1913)

Compiler and date details

Introduction

It is known that Arthur Koebele, the collector of the type material, collected in areas between Gordonvale, Cairns and Kuranda in North Queensland between June 1904 and March 1905 and much of that material was subsequently described by Kirkaldy (1906, 1907). Muir (1913: 5) states that the material covered in his 1913 publication was "collected by Mr Koebele and myself during our investigations abroad" but it is unclear whether this refers to Koebele's earlier visits to Queensland or subsequent trips he may have made with Muir. The origin of the type material of P. koebelei therefore remains simply as Queensland.

Diagnosis

Ventral edge of pygophor truncate; lateral edges between style and anal segment produced into triangular plates(subequilateral); anal segment small, projecting very slightly beyond apices of lateral triangular edges, cylindrical, anus situated at apex; styles slightly longer than broad, broadly rounded at apex, upper edge irregularly produced. a small spine on lower edge of apex. Length 2.5 mm: tegmen 6 mm (Muir 1913).

This species resembles L. gemina (New Guinea) in colour, in the small size of the male genitalia, the short anal segment and genital styles and in the absence of a medioventral process on the pygofer. It can be distinguished from L. gemina in the shape of the dorsolateral angle of the pygofer which is triangular instead of rounded, in details of the structure of the genital styles and in the structure of the aedeagus (Van Stalle 1992).
