Craig, M.T., Hastings, P.A. & Pondella, D.J. II 2004. Notes on the systematics of the crestfish genus Lophotus (Lampridiformes: Lophotidae), with a new record from California. Bulletin of the Southern California Academy of Sciences 103(2): 57-65 fig. 1 (Craig et al. (2004) suggested that there may be three species in the genus Lophotus, They added that L. guntheri may be the valid name for specimens in the South Pacfic, however further work was needed to determine if the south Pacific specimens are conspecific with Lophotus cristatus Johnson, 1863 from the eastern Atlantic)
