Species Liza ordensis (Whitley, 1945)

Diamond Mullet, Basket Mullet, Ord River Mullet

Miscellaneous Literature Names

Introduction

There has been considerable confusion over the names of Liza alata, Liza tade and Liza ordensis. Thompson (1954) regarded Liza alata as a senior synonym of Liza ordensis. Larson et al. (2013) recognised the species as distinct based on molecular studies of Durand et al. (2012a). However, Durand et al. (2012b) stated that ordensis was a synonym of alata and placed the species in the genus Planiliza. Larson et al (2013) also indicated that previous records of Liza tade from northern Australian (Thompson 1997; Hoese & Bray 2006) were based on misidentifications of this species. Harrison & Senou (1999) also suggested that records of Liza planiceps which they treated as the correct name for the species previously referred to as Liza tade from Australia were probably misidentifications of other species. However J. Ghasemzadeh, who has studied Australian mullets has identified material of both species (tade and ordensis) from Australia. We are unable to resolve the conflict.
