Introduction

The Parazenidae comprise three genera and four species worldwide, with two genera and three species occurring in Australian waters.

Slender and smooth dories are found in tropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans on the continental shelf and slope. Maximum length attained is 14 cm.

Tyler et al. (2003) combined the Cyttopsidae and the Parazenidae. The family Parazenidae is distinguished from other zeiform fishes by having pelvic fins with seven or nine rays and no spines. Mead (1957) reviewed the monotypic Parazen. Heemstra (1999) treated some species, including some speices in the Zeidae.
