Species Lepidurus apus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Generic Combinations

Distribution

States

South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia

Extra Distribution Information

Widespread, including Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Asia minor, Russia, Australia and New Zealand (Longhurst 1955); given that the forms in North America have been restudied and found to be distinct from L. apus (Rogers 2001), it is possible L. apus sensu stricta is not so widely distributed beyond Europe; Longhurst synonymised the Australia form L. viridus with L. apus and considered it the subspecies L. apus viridus; this has not been challenged, but given the North American experience, could be invalid.

Note that conversion of the original AFD map of states, drainage basins and coastal and oceanic zones to IBRA and IMCRA regions may have produced errors. The new maps will be reviewed and corrected as updates occur. The maps may not indicate the entire distribution. See further details below.
