Subclass PHYLLOPODA G.O. Sars, 1867

Introduction

Subclass Phyllopoda is sister to Sarsostraca and was defined according to modern standards by Olesen (2007, 2009), who pro¬vided six synapomorphies for the taxon: trunk limbs with five median endites and an unsegmented endopod; internal compound eyes; naupliar eye bearing four pigmented cups; telson with a pair of dorsal setae; oogenesis with three nutrition cells associated with each oocyte; and carapace first arising as “paired” anlagen immediately posterior to (but separate from) the head. As summarised by Rogers (2024) the extant Phyllopoda consist of two superorders: Calmanostraca and Diplostraca subdivided as below. Except for Cladocera, the unranked clades are not included in this AFD classification.

Order Notostraca Sars, 1867: 1 family

Superorder Diplostraca Gerstaecker, 1866
Order Laevicaudata Linder, 1945: 1 family

Unranked clade Onychocaudata Olesen & Richter, 2013
Order Spinicaudata Linder, 1945: 4 families

Unranked clade Cladoceromorpha Ax, 1999
Order Cyclestherida Sars, 1877: 1 family
