Introduction
Genetic work has suggested that the genus is polyphyletic, with H. carbo closer to Leioptherapon and Amniataba than other Australian species of Hephaestus (see Pusey et al 2016 and Davis et al. 2013).

Several disjunct populations including South Alligator River (132º25'E) and Goyder River (135º03'E), NT, and Gulf of Carpentaria from Gregory River (139º10´E) to Jardine River (11º05'S, 142º22´E), QLD; tropical.
