Distribution

States

New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia

Note that conversion of the original AFD map of states, drainage basins and coastal and oceanic zones to IBRA and IMCRA regions may have produced errors. The new maps will be reviewed and corrected as updates occur. The maps may not indicate the entire distribution. See further details below.

Ecological Descriptors

Adult: diurnal, herbivore (associated flora: Acacia calamifolia Sweet ex Lindl. [FABACEAE] Reed-leaf Wattle; Calothamnus sp. [MYRTACEAE]; Calothamnus sp. [MYRTACEAE] (oviposition)), volant.

Larva: root-feeder (associated flora: Eucalyptus spp. [MYRTACEAE] Gum Trees).

Extra Ecological Information

Hawkeswood & Peterson (1982) cited Carter (1929) recording this species breeding in roots and trunks of mallee trees (Eucalyptus spp.) in inland Australia. They also recorded one female ovipositing below ground near the base of Calothamnus sp. The habit of the males of this species to aggregate on discarded "stubbies" (brown bottles) has been discussed in papers, even one poem, see Gwynne & Rentz (1983, 1984). Hawkeswood & Knowles (1985) recorded possible predation of this species by the Australian Kestrel, Falco cenchroides.
