Introduction

The family Ilyocypridae comprises the subfamilies Pelocypridinae Triebel, 1962 and Ilyocyprinae Brady & Norman, 1889. Only the latter subfamily has representatives in Australia.

Diagnosis

Shell elongate to oval in shape. Anterior and posterior margins equally broadly rounded. Dorsal margin straight; ventral margin parallel to dorsal margin, only in mouth region weakly concave. Usually strongly calcified. Surface mostly rough, pitted and with vertical folds (sulci) caused by constrictions of adductor muscle on freshly moulted, soft carapace. Valves strongly calcified. Calcified zone of inner lamella relatively narrow, fused zone relatively broad, penetrated by many simple marginal pore canals. Marginal zone with strong inner list, especially at anterior margin. Normal pore canals simple and sparse. Antennula with claw like bristles. Antenna never with long swimming bristles. Third endite of maxillula without teeth-like bristles. Endopod of maxilla 2, 3-segmented and always rod-shaped. Terminal segment of third thoracopod distinct.
