Type species:
Horouta inconstans Knight, 1975 by original designation.
Introduction
This genus was created for a single endemic New Zealand species but a revision of the genus by Fletcher (2004) added six additional species, two of them new. A seventh Australian species, from Barrow Island, Western Australia, was added by Fletcher (2009) and another, from tropical Australia, by Fletcher (2018). The genus now comprises eight Australian species and a single New Zealand endemic. Many of the species are represented in collections mainly by brachypterous adults with macropterous individuals being uncommon although only macropterous forms are known of the anomalous H. tropica.. The genus name comes from one of the canoes which brought the ancestors of the Maori to New Zealand (Knight 1975).

Diagnosis
Knight (1975) provided a comprehensive description of the genus which was followed by Fletcher (2004). The species are mainly distinguished by having the aedeagus extending posteriorly a short distance and then curved dorsally and bearing one or two pairs of lateral processes. The arrangement of the lateral processes distinguishes the species. Two species also have a pair of pygofer processes.
