Subfamily Herpetocypridinae Kaufmann, 1900

Introduction

This is a cosmopolitan subfamily, comprising 10 genera.

 

Diagnosis

Carapace medium sized, 1–3 mm long, mostly elongate, subrectangular and laterally compressed. Surface of valves smooth to rough. Valves with conical inclusions showing up in transmitted light as small, dark dots among larger seta-bearing pore canals. Marginal valve structures mostly well developed; branched pore canals and marginal septa present in some genera. Selvage peripheral on both valves. Left valve overlaps right one ventrally. Swimming setae on antenna either well developed or more or less reduced. GM claw in male antenna modified into comb-like structure with row of strong teeth. Caudal ramus well developed: two rami symmetrical or asymmetrical; attachment with very characteristic basal (distal) triangular reinforcement. Hemipenis with large and sclerotised bladder-like part "c" of labyrinth, post-labyrinthal internal spermiduct with variable number (1–4) of additional, circular loops or whorls. Posterior end of body lacking seta or spine.
