Genus Heronax Kirkaldy, 1906

Compiler and date details

13 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This genus contains a dozen or so species distributed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines with a single species from Panama which Muir (1918) states is a Heronax without any discussion. Muir's (1918) suggestion needs to be examined in light of the distribution of the genus generally in the western Pacific region. In Australia, the genus is restricted to the eastern coastal areas of Queensland with most species described from the wet tropics.

Diagnosis

Head produced in front of eyes, vertex triangular, disk excavate, wider at base than an eye; there is no transverse carina dividing vertex from frons, but the latter is suddenly more shallow and the lateral keels are almost contiguous. Antennae articulated close to clypeus, second segment subcylindric, elongate, about three-fourths the length of the frons, not (or very slightly) sinuate apically. Scutellum with one (3?) obscure keel (Kirkaldy 1906)
