Species Hephaestus fuliginosus (Macleay, 1883)

Sooty Grunter, Black Bream, Blubberlips, Northern Grunter, Purple Grunter

 

Introduction

Pusey et al. (2016) indicated data from nuclear genes suggested that H. tulliensis, H. fuliginosus and H. jenkensi belong to a single species, but data from mitocondrial genes suggested the species are distinct species.

Extra Distribution Information

Daly River, NT (130º30´E) to upper Burdekin River, QLD (20º31´S), with some translocations further south; records from New Guinea based on undescribed specis (see Allen et al. 2008); tropical.

Australian Endemic.
