Introduction
Tentatively we retain the name Hemigobius hoevenii here. Huang et al (2014) regarded Hemigobius crassa Herre as distinct from this species. Larson (1999) regarded the latter species as a junior synonym of H. hoevenii. Australian material appears most similar to Hemigobius hoevenii as defined by Huang et al. (2014), but has a distinctive colour pattern, suggesting that it might represent a separate species.
