- Oplopomus diacanthus Schultz, L.P. 1943. Fishes of the Phoenix and Samoan Islands collected in 1939 during the expedition of the U.S.S. Bushnell. Bulletin of the United States National Museum 180: 1-316 figs 1-27 pls 1-9 [229, 242, fig. 22] [derivation is from the Greek akanthos = spine or thorn and transliterated to a masculine noun in apposition].

Introduction
The species has been incorrectly treated as a junior synonym of Gobius atherinoides Peters, 1855. The types of that species include two genera, neither congeneric with Opua (see Larson & Wright 2003). Multiple species have been misidentified as Oplopomops atherinoides.
