Introduction

The species is the juvenile phase of a species that turns black as adults. Several names are available and we use the name here for the species which most closely matches the original material. Other names available include Gobiodon spilophthalmus Fowler, 1944, Gobiodon albofasciatus Sawada & Arai, 1972, Gobiodon acicularis Harold & Winterbottom, 1995 and Gobiodon winterbottomi Suzuki, Yanao & Senou, 2012. Some are likely to be distinct species.
