Introduction
The species name has been applied to a number of species. It is unclear if Australian material is identical to material from the central and western Indian Ocean. The species is frequently confused with G. aureus in Australia. Gobius gutum from India is somtimes regarded as a synonym, but is now known to be a species of Awaous from India.
