Genus Gerres Quoy & Gaimard, 1824

Silver Biddy, Silverbelly

Introduction

Woodland (2001) recorded Gerres kapas from the North West Shelf, WA to Darwin, NT. Iwatsuki et al. regarded that species as a synonym of Gerres oyena, based on non-type Bleeker material, but did not examine material identified as that from Australia. The identity of material called Gerres kapas from Australia (Woodland 2001; Larson et al. 1997) is unclear. That species was called Cotton Silverbiddy or Singapore Silver-biddy, with the CAAB number 37349020. The genus is clearly in need of further study in Australia.
