Introduction
This suborder contains a single family, Gobiesocidae (Nelson 1994). Our understanding of the relationships of the family have changed considerably over the last 50 years. Gosline (1970) suggested a relationship with Draconettidae and Callionymidae, subsequently supported by Patterson & Rosen (1989) and followed by Nelson (1994, 2006). Some workers, such as Greenwood et al. (1966), suggested a more primitive association with paracanthopterygians. Several workers, including Hayashi et al. (1986) have questioned the relationship with callionymids and draconettids and Jamieson (1991) suggested a possible relationship with batracoidiformes. Springer & Johnson (2004) placed the group as a suborder of the Callionymioidei. Nelson (2006) retained the suborder Gobiesocoidei, but accepted a close relationship between Gobiesocoidei and Callionymioidei.
