Genus Fusigobius Whitley, 1930
- Fusigobius Whitley, G.P. 1930. Additions to the checklist of the fishes of New South Wales No. 3. The Australian Zoologist 6(2): 117-123 fig. 14 [122].
Type species:
Gobius neophytus Günther, 1877 by original designation.
Introduction
Randall (1995) regarded Fusigobius as a synonym of the New World genus Coryphopterus. However Thacker & Cole (2002) pointed out that Fusigobius lacks the median crest present on the head in Copryphopterus and that findings from genetic studies did not warrant merging of the two genera.
Australian material was not studied by Randall (2001). Consequently, use of the names of species described by Randall (2001) is tentative. Many of the species from Australia do not fully agree with the descriptions provided for other parts of the Indo-Pacific region.
