Genus Foa Jordan & Evermann, 1905

Introduction

The genus is currently under study and is poorly known from Australia. Species have been confused under the generic names Fowleria and Apogonichthys. Currently 9 species are recognised (Fraser 2014; Mabuchi et al. 2014). Four species have been recognised from Australia. Apogon albomaculosus, previously placed here has been placed in a separate genus Ozichthhys.

APOGONIDAE: Foa brachygrammus (Jenkins, 1903) [species name is noun in apposition, often mispelled brachygramma] — Fraser, T.H. & Randall, J.E. 2011. Two new species of Foa (Apogonidae) from the Pacific Plate, with redescriptions of Foa brachygramma and Foa fo. Zootaxa 2988: 1–27 [5] (considered to be endemic to Hawaiian Islands)
