Introduction
This species has been confused with Eviota albolineata from the central Pacific (Greenfield & Randall 2010). However use of the name Eviota guttata for the Australian form is tentative, until further comparison is made with western Indian Ocean material and Eviota rubrisparsa. It would appear that Jewett & Karnella (1983) may have been right that Eviota guttata is restricted to the Red Sea and Gulf of Oman. The Australian material may represent a separate species; it appears to differ considerably in coloration from typical Eviota guttata, with the species ranging from the Maldives to the western Pacific. Greenfield & Winterbottom (2016) suggested that material from the Pacific may belong to an undescribed species. Specimens from Lord Howe Island are included here tentatively, but these may be the real Eviota albolineata. Further work is needed on this complex.
