Species Eviota dorsogilva Greenfield & Randall, 2011

Black-spot Pygmy-goby, Blackbelly Goby, Blackbelly Pygmy Goby, Creamback Dwarfgoby, Red-and-black Eviota (Standard Name for Eviota nigriventris)

Introduction

The species was described only recently. Previously it was recorded from Australia as Eviota nigriventris. However, little Australian material was examined and it is not clear whether Eviota nigriventris also occurs in Australia. Eviota nigriventris is known from Indonesia, not far from Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea and from the Chesterfield Islands in the Coral Sea. Similarly Eviota brahmi Greenfield & Tornabene, 2014 was described from Papua New Guinea and may occur in Australia. Greenfield & Tornabene (2014) suggested that the identity of the Australian material was uncertain after genetic studies of specimens from other localities and suggested that E dorsogilva might be restricted to Fiji. Tentatively we retain the name here pending further studies.
