Species Eurinopsyche obscurata (Fabricius, 1775)

Compiler and date details

28 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

One of the species derived from Cooks voyage in HMS Endeavour along the eastern coastline of Australia in 1770. The type material may comprise a holotype by monotypy. Metcalf (1947) gives a record of the species from Java but this is derived from an obscure publication by Gadeau de Kerville (1881) on insect phosphorescence and must therefore be considered doubtful.

Nagai & Porion (1996) listed the three subspecies recognised by Lallemand (1963) as being synonyms but provide no evidence to support this action. They do not even provide relevant information on the type specimens they examined. Here, we have followed Lallemand's (1963) treatment of the species pending an investigation of the male genitalia of the various forms.
