Introduction

Funkhouser (1951) recognised seven species, two of which were later synonymised. The genus currently includes five named species from Australia, the Philippines, Vanuatu, Indonesia and New Guinea. The type species, which is the only described Australian species, is widespread in southern Australia and a second, undescribed, species was recognised by Day (1999). The etymology was given by Goding (1903) as "Dedicated to Mr Charles French, Government Entomologist of Victoria, for his uniform kindness and courtesy."

Misidentifications

Membracidae: Ibiceps laminifer Buckton, 1903 [this species was based on a single specimen bearing labels for both Singapore and Australia (Buckton 1903). It was listed as a species of Eufrenchia from both localities by Funkhouser (1951) but the Australian record was treated as doubtful by Evans (1966). The species, as Ibiceps lamifer [sic], was treated as Indonesian by Day (1999)] — Buckton, G.B. 1903. A Monograph of the Membracidae. Covent Garden : Lovell Reeve & Co. Limited 296 pp., 60 pls. Diagnosis

Head nearly triangular, lateral border denticulate, convex in front, base nearly straight; eyes prominent outward. Prothorax rudely punctured or reticulate, rises vertically from base, armed on each side with a long, strong, vertical, flattened horn, with sides parallel, superior part curved outward, falciform, apex obtuse with two little teeth between which is a shallow sulcus; posterior process long, slender, apex lightly decurved slightly passing apices of tegmina; lateral horns near at bases, between which median carina is obsolete. Tegmina with cells of corium narrow, three discoidal cells, the first placed between the radial and first ulnar veins in front of second apical cell, second and third between the first and second ulnar veins behind the third and fourth apical cells; furnished with a transverse venule between the two ulnar veins, near base. Wings with four apical cells. Tibiae flattened and lightly dilated (Goding 1903).

Readily identified by large, wide, curing lateral pronotal processes and both cross veins m–cu1 and M–cu2 present. Median pronotal process as long as or longer than tegmen (Day 1999).

Day (1999) provided a comprehensive redescription of the genus.
