Subfamily Eucypridinae Bronstein, 1947

Introduction

The subfamily Eucypridinae comprises the following genera: Alboa De Deckker, 1981, Eucypris Vávra, 1891, Prionocypris Brady & Norman, 1896, Riocypris Klie, 1935, Tonacypris Diebel & Pietrzemiuk, 1975, Ttrajancypris Martens, 1989, and Koencypris Meisch, 2000.

There are no good characters in either valve or soft part morphology to characterise this subfamily, which must be considered a collection of species without special features. At the present state of knowledge it is therefore not possible to give a sound diagnosis of Eucypridinae. The subfamily is subdivided into two tribes, Eucypridini Bronstein, 1947 and Mytilocypridini De Deckker, 1974. This subdivision is not accepted herein, because the latter tribe is not closely connected with Eucypridini and should be transferred into some other subfamily (most probably Megalocypridinae). The following Australian genera are placed in the tribe Mytilocypridini: Australocypris De Deckker, 1974, Caboncypris De Deckker, 1982; Lacrimacypris Halse & McRae, 2004, Mytilocypris McKenzie, 1966, Repandocypris Halse & McRae, 2004, and Trigoncypris De Deckker, 1976. All are Australian endemics, and because the position of the tribe Mytilocypridini is still officially in the subfamily Eucypridinae, this is retained in the present checklist.

Diagnosis

Cyprididae subfamily with medium length, carapace elliptical to elongate, more rarely stout in lateral view. Left valve overlaps right one ventrally. First thoracopod with "c" seta on protopod.
