Species Euacanthella impressa Fletcher, 2008

Compiler and date details

1 August 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This species was described only recently from material collected on Barrow Island in the Carnarvon bioregion and Lorna Glen Station in the Gascoyne bioregion of Western Australia. The extraordinary ovipositor, which takes up about 1/3 of the total body length of the female, indicates a specialised oviposition site, possibly in clumps of spinifex Triodia sp. (Poaceae) which dominates the ground flora at the known sites where the species is known to occur. The species has also mainly been collected in pitfall traps and suction sampling, suggesting that the species lives at or near the ground.

Diagnosis

A comprehensive description was provided by Fletcher (2008). The female is instantly recognisable by the elongate ovipositor. The male can be identified using the male genitalia. However, since this is the only species of Euacanthellinae known from Western Australia, the distribution will also aid in identification. Fletcher (2008) provided description and figures of the male and female genitalia.
