Tribe Euacanthellini Evans, 1966

Compiler and date details

1 August 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

Evans (1966) established this tribe for the genus Euacanthella within the subfamily Aphrodinae without providing a diagnosis for the tribe. In 1974, he raised the tribe to subfamily level, again without providing a diagnosis. Hamilton (1999) recognised that the Euacanthellinae comprised two tribes, one of which he described as new. Only three species of the Euacanthellini are known, two endemic to Australia and one occurring in Australia and New Zealand.

Diagnosis

Euacanthellini are all medium sized to largish leafhoppers found in grasslands and pastures. The tegmina are either brachypterous or extend to about the 8th abdominal segment. The head is triangular with the sides of the frontoclypeus narrowly visible in dorsal view. The second hind tarsomere has an oblique pecten.
