Subspecies Eocenchrea costalis fusca (Metcalf, 1936)

Compiler and date details

12 January 2011 - Murray J. Fletcher

Introduction

This subspecies was mentioned by Jacobi (1928) as an unnamed colour variant of Gonyphlepsia costalis Jacobi. The three syntypes of G. costalis presumably included both colour forms since Jacobi (1928) did not indicate that the variant was represented by additional specimens. Metcalf (1936) gave a name to the variety without indicating that he had seen any specimens. It is therefore important for the first reviser of this group to check all three male syntypes of G. costalis to determine whether one of these is the colour variant and whether the male genitalia of all three specimens are the same. Under Article 45.6.4 of ICZN, a variety recognised prior to 1961 is to be given subspecific status unless it is clearly proposed to be infrasubspecific in the context of the original publication. It could be argued that Jacobi (1928) intended that this variety was simply a colour variant since he included it within the description of G. costalis. However, Metcalf's name is available if an examination of the male genitaila of the three syntypes of G. costalis shows that more than one species is included.
