Species Oxyeleotris lineolatus (Steindachner, 1867)

Sleepy Cod, Black Banded Guavina, Black-banded Gudgeon, Black-banded Loter, Daly River Gudgeon, Giant Gudgeon, Lined Guavina, Loter, Mud Gudgeon, Sleeper

Miscellaneous Literature Names

  • Oxyeleotris lineolata [authors of incorrectly treat the species name as an adjective].

Introduction

Frequently misidentified as O. herwerdenii, considered to be a junior synonym of O. selheimi by some authors (e.g. Allen et al. 2002). However examination of types suggested that the species is a synonym of O. lineolata, based on the striped form. The stripe can be turned on and off in life. Genetic studies also indicate that O lineolata also is known from southern New Guinea.
