Introduction

Epigonids are found on the continental slope, oceanic areas and around seamounts worldwide. Gon (1999) reported five or six genera and about 30 species known. Subsequently over 10 additional species have been described in the genus Epigonus (Okamoto & Motomura 2013; Okamoto 2012). Three genera and 9 species are known from Australia, with an additional species from off Cocos (Keeling) Islands.

Johnson (1984) recognised five genera in the family, separating it from the Apogonidae. Mayer (1974) revised the genus Epigonus, recognising 12 species in the genus. Subsequently, Abramov (1992) provided a key to species of Epigonus, recognising 25 species. Parin et al. (2012) and Okamoto and collaborators have revised various groups of Epigonus.
