Introduction
The Diceratiidae comprise currently two genera and five species. One species is known from Australia. The family was revised by Uwate (1979), Pietsch et al. (2004) and Pietsch (2009).
Diceratiids are known from meso- and bathypelagic environments of the world's oceans. They are distinctive in having a short body, an exposed second dorsal fin spine with a light organ, and minute spinules covering the body.
