Subfamily Cyprinotinae Bronstein, 1947

Introduction

This is a cosmopolitan subfamily. It comprises the genera Cyprinotus Brady, 1886; Heterocypris Claus, 1892; Hemicypris Sars, 1903 and Homocypris Sars, 1924. De Deckker (1981) placed his monospecific genus Alboa De Deckker, 1981 in this subfamily, but according to Karanovic (2007), this genus belongs in to the subfamily Eucypridinae.

Members of the group are found in freshwater.

 

Diagnosis

Carapace usually relatively stout, rarely elongate in lateral view, about 1–2 mm long. Dorsal margin usually distinctly arched, never straight. Valves usually asymmetrical. One of valves with marginal tubercles. Caudal ramus well developed, always with both claws and setae. Posterior seta distinctly displaced from posterior claw.
