Subfamily Cypridopsinae Kaufmann, 1900

 

Introduction

Cypridopsinae is a freshwater subfamily with a cosmopolitan distribution. Presently, it comprises 16 extant genera, of which three are found in Australia.

 

Diagnosis

Carapace small, about 0.3–0.9 mm long. Left valve overlaps right one ventrally or right valve overlaps left one, arrangement constant within one genus. Line of concrescence of both valves anteroventrally curved inwards in mouth region, fused marginal zone therefore distinctly broadened there. Caudal ramus strongly reduced to one short ramus and flagellum; sometimes caudal ramus completely missing. Hemipenis internal structure with characteristic loop.
