Subfamily Cyclocypridinae Kaufmann, 1900

Introduction

Cyclocypridinae are exclusively freshwater ostracods. Although very specious in the Northern Hemisphere, only two species have been reported for Australia. Of these, one should be treated as incertae sedis, due to the very poor description; it might not belong in this subfamily. A list of all species and genera in the subfamily is provided in Karanovic (2011), with keys and distributions.

Diagnosis

Carapace small, less than 1 mm in length, usually relatively stout in lateral view, moderately compressed to ovate in dorsal view. Penultimate segment of male antenna subdivided and usually with male bristles. Swimming setae on antenna usually well developed, or reduced. Endopod of male thoracopod transformed into clasping organ, and 2-segmented. Terminal segment of the third thoracopod distinctly separated, terminally with long cleaning seta and two short setae. Proximal part of Zenker's organ spherically enlarged (not funnel-shaped); chitinous spines straight or branched.
