Tribe Coraebini Bedel, 1921

Introduction

The fourteen genera that comprise the Coraebini make it the most diverse higher taxon in the Australian buprestid fauna. The very recent phylogenetic revision of this tribe by Kubán et al. (2001) has yielded a subtribal scheme of which six are represented in Australia: Ethoniina, Cisseina, Amorphosomina, Coraebina, Toxoscelina and Synechocerina. Four genera from Australia were not placed in the study: Alcinous Kerremans, Paracephala Saunders, Meliboethion Obenberger and Dinocephalia Obenberger. The latter three genera were revised by Bellamy (1988) and the Australian genera of this tribe were subjected to a phylogenetic analysis.

Alcinous Kerremans is represented by only two species, both occuring along the east coast of New South Wales and Queensland (Williams 1983).

The other four genera, Amorphosoma Laporte, Coraebus Gory & Laporte, Polyonychus Chevrolat and Toxoscelus Deyrolle, are of wider Old World or Oriental Region distribution. The single species each of Coraebus and Polyonychus are possibly one-time introductions or mislabelled specimens which do not belong to the native Australian fauna. The presence of Sambus and Toxoscelus is confirmed by recent determinations and descriptions by Bellamy & Peterson (2000).
